September 29, 2009:  Two huge steam generators are conveyed over the road that runs through our vineyards, enroute to Three Mile Island.

Preparing the Bridge for 825 tons
This bridge over the Conoy Creek is located at the
south corner of our property.  Today it is strengthened with a steel
over-bridge, with plywood at the end.
Beginning before sunrise, the crews are finished by mid-morning.
Target arrival time is noon.

The Onlookers
Roads surrounding us are blocked to traffic,
which limits the crowd.  Some people walk a distance.
Neighbors within the restricted zone are lucky.
Nissley staff is here, as well as construction and utilities workers.
As the convoy approaches,
we are instructed to leave this area near the bridge.

It's Here!
The first generator crosses the bridge.
We are not allowed within 30 feet of the road.
The cornfield prohibits a perfect view.

Rounding the Curve after the Bridge
A police car is the escort.  The speed is 1 to 3 mph.

Climbing the Hill (coming forward)
The transporter is Italian-made,
and the operators are also Italian.
The first driver, wearing red jacket and orange vest,
sits at the left corner with a computer (not a steering wheel).
Another driver sits on the same side at the back corner.

A Roadside View
If the operators have time to look, they see our
DeChaunac grapes, two days from being harvested.

At the Top of the Hill
At this point, our property rises several feet above the road,
which allows a great view of the structural support.
The generator weighs 510 tons; the transporter weighs 315 tons.
Areva is the company that built the generators in France.
They are also in charge of the delivery.

Also at the Top of the Hill
We serve Petite Rosé, and toast the convoy as it passes.
The commemorative labels say
"To celebrate the convoy of French generators crossing Lancaster County for Three Mile Island, September 2009"
Available at all Nissley Wine shops ($6.90 per 375 mL bottle)

Crawling Past the Intersection of Vintage Drive
A view from the back.  Many wheels and axels distribute the load.
All wheels can turn 90 degrees, wherever necessary.
Spotters insure a steady course.

Farewell
The generator continues along Stackstown Road,
approaching our Niagara vines on the right.
This is the second generator, about 20 minutes behind the first.
Both will stop for the night in Bainbridge and continue
to Three Mile Island the next day.
